Earlier this month, Pryor High School Aviation students, accompanied by instructors Dr. Jenny Peters and Tami Rowland, traveled to the Oklahoma State Capitol for a special event hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA). The event celebrated ODAA Students of the Month and brought together representatives from the aviation industry, military branches, and universities across the state to connect with students from Oklahoma AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) schools.
Among the honorees was Pryor High School senior Nick Rowland, who was recognized as the ODAA Aerospace Student of the Month for January 2025. Nick had the distinct honor of delivering a speech on the floor of the Oklahoma State Senate. In his address, he outlined the diverse career paths available through Pryor’s Aviation program, including opportunities to become licensed pilots, certified airframe and powerplant (A&P) technicians, and specialists in unmanned aircraft systems. Nick emphasized the program's hands-on approach and highlighted that students have the opportunity to graduate with valuable certifications, preparing them for immediate entry into the workforce or further specialized education.
Throughout the day, students heard inspiring messages from Oklahoma senators, representatives, and leaders from the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard. These speakers encouraged students to pursue their aviation aspirations and shared insights about the wide range of possibilities within the field.
The Pryor students were also granted the rare privilege of sitting on the floor of the Oklahoma State Senate chamber—a unique experience that left a lasting impression. According to their instructors, the students represented their school and community with professionalism and pride, making a positive impact on everyone they encountered.
Dr. Peters expressed her admiration for all the students, particularly highlighting Nick's contributions. “I was very proud of Nick,” she said. “His speech was dynamic and well-rehearsed. Nick is going to move forward in his life and continue to be a shining star—he will continue to make us all proud.”
The Capitol visit not only recognized student achievements but also reinforced the bright future that lies ahead for Pryor students in the aviation field. Pryor High School is honored to be part of Oklahoma’s growing aviation and aerospace community.
