Students at Roosevelt Elementary had a special visitor this week—author Traci Sorell stopped by to share the inspiring story behind her book Classified: The Secret Career of Mary Golda Ross, Cherokee Aerospace Engineer.
Sorell captivated students as she spoke about Mary Golda Ross, a trailblazing Cherokee woman who went from being the only girl in her high school math class to becoming a teacher, earning an engineering degree, and eventually working in the top-secret Skunk Works division at Lockheed. Ross was not only a brilliant engineer but also a mentor to Native American students and a champion for young women pursuing careers in STEM.
The story holds a special connection to Roosevelt Elementary. Second-grade teacher Whitney Roberson shared a personal tie—her grandmother Evelyn, pictured above, is the niece of Mary Golda Ross. That means the woman behind the book's inspiring story is Evelyn’s aunt, affectionately known as “Aunt Gold.”
During the visit, several Roosevelt Tigers had the opportunity to purchase copies of Classified and have them signed by the author. A select group of students also enjoyed a luncheon with Sorell, making for a memorable day full of learning and inspiration.
