Pryor Senior Kaitlynn Casey Named Gates Scholarship Recipient

Pryor High School Senior Kaitlynn Casey has been named a Gates Scholar.  Casey, who plans to attend Oklahoma University this fall, “will receive funding for the full cost of attendance.” The Gates Scholarship (TGS) includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, transportation, and other potential personal costs.

“I was in absolute shock when I saw the ‘Congratulations’ email pop up on my phone,” Casey said. “I was so happy to know that all the trust and hard work built up with the people and teachers around me paid off.  I am beyond thankful to have received this scholarship.”

Casey is among a select group of 750 Gates Scholars chosen from 53,000 applicants.  To receive this scholarship a student must exhibit academic achievement, leadership skills, and emotional maturity. The application process required Casey to respond to various questions, write lengthy essays, and participate in online interviews.

Much of Casey’s time has been devoted to earning her spot in the Top Ten Percent of the Class of 2024.  Casey’s leadership experience includes guiding the yearbook staff as the Pryor High School 2024 Yearbook Editor, participating in the MidA Ambassador program, and interacting with the Pryor community at large through her work as the District marketing intern.

"Kaitlynn is one of those rare students who takes positive feedback to heart, improves through hard work and dedication, and never gives up in pursuit of her goals," said Dr. Joseph Willis, PHS English and German Teacher .

Casey is also involved in Pryor athletics. “As an athlete, she is positive, asks for corrections, and works until she gets better. She does not give up. During swim meets, she not only cheers on her teammates, she cheers and encourages athletes from other schools. She is a great student, athlete, and teammate,” said Jodee Pate, PHS AP Biology Teacher and Head Swim Coach.

This summer, Casey will travel to Phoenix, Arizona, all expenses paid, to attend The Gates Scholarship Summer Institute.  Scholars from around the nation will gather to attend orientation and leadership events during this event.

This “highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income families” was founded and funded by Bill and Melinda Gates. This scholarship has helped many students in the past pay for the college of their dreams.
